El-Nino Effect-Management techniques
For the farmers in the Thiruvannamalai district, the ongoing drought caused by El Nino, characterized by extreme temperatures
and significantly low or unseasonal rainfall has led to alterations in crop growth stages, substantial reductions in yield,
rising food prices and extensive losses in livestock. In light of these challenges,
the following drought management techniques are recommended for implementation.
To retain soil moisture, it is advisable to conduct summer tillage for effective irrigation and weed management.
Additionally, rainwater harvesting can be achieved by constructing farm ponds. Water conservation strategies
should include the removal of silt from reservoir systems and the reinforcement of banks. Soil moisture retention can also be enhanced
through inter-ploughing and the application of crop residues as mulch.
